New restaurants abound

A couple weeks ago, Bites of Bull City highlighted some of the most anticipated Durham restaurants, markets, and bars opening in 2015, but there were also a number of great eateries that opened their doors just before the new year. If you didn’t have a chance to check out the latest places and spaces during the holiday season, now’s the time!

In November, The Boot, a casual Italian eatery operated by long-time Durham restaurant scene staple, Andy McGowan, the founder of Geer Street Garden,1 opened in the Rockwood strip center on University Drive across from Scott Howell’s Durham pinnacle, Nana’s. The Boot posts specials regularly on Facebook, so that’s a good way to stay informed.

In December, Monuts opened its new location at 1002 Ninth Street. (The former Magnolia Grill.) They also post a daily menu and specials on Facebook and Twitter, along with mouth-watering pics of daily donut flavors!

Before the new year, a new market also came to Durham. The Fresh Market —a small grocery chain that originated in Greensboro—opened in the Parkway Plaza off of University Drive (the plaza behind Target). The store is small, but well-designed and makes for an easy and pleasant grocery shopping experience. They offer great weekly meal deals, which you can check regularly on the Website.

In December, Juju, an Asian tapas restaurant on 9th Street, guided by renown Chef, Charlie Deal, of Jujube in Chapel Hill (currently undergoing renovations) and Dos Perros on Mangum Street in Durham, opened its doors and has been getting rave reviews. View the menu here. (Full disclosure: Dos Perros is Clarion Content advertiser.)

Also receiving favorable recognition from foodies and socialites is Bar Virgile, opened in mid-December by owner Scott Howell. (Ed. note: local restaurant scene godfather) and his wife, Aubrey. This gorgeous bar, on Mangum, just off Main offers classic cocktails, wine, beer, inventive snacks, meals, and dessert.

Notes
1Durham restaurant trivia hounds will note that Andy McGowan gave The Federal its fries and its original menu, was part of the founding of The Piedmont, and even worked at Foster’s Market back in the day.
