Dear Hearts, located on Foster Street by the old baseball stadium, has become a downtown staple. Unlike other boutiques with a holier than thou, cool girl attitude that can make shopping feel overwhelming, owners Donna Orr and Stella Wingfield Cook have all the on trend, but timeless styling we all crave, without the intimidation factor.
Their latest ventures have involved working with well-known musical artists on styling projects, including local favorite, Sylvan Esso. But what they’re buzzing about lately is plans for the Eaux Claires Music Festival, happening for the first time July 16-18 in Eaux Claires, Wisconsin, where they will be in charge of all the event styling and staging for the backstage and VIP areas. There will also be a Dear Hearts Pop-Up shop in Wisconsin one week prior to the festival.
Orr and and Cook are taking this project as an opportunity to break the standards for event styling at festivals like Coachella and Bonaroo. Instead of a standard, roped off, overlit selfie stage, they are collaborating with local artists, vendors, and farmers to showcase Eaux Claires in an organic, original way. They plan to have installations from local artists, including potters and painters, a juice bar showcasing local produce, and more. It’s a refreshing move away from the corporate path many festivals follow.
Of course, with summertime musical festivals comes the shoving of ‘festival chic’ style into every retail store, highlighting fringe, knee-high gladiator sandals, and everything you would never actually want to wear in the hot, often muddy, backdrop that accompanies most outdoor festivals. Street style photography has become a genre of entertainment on it’s own, and places like Coachella are breeding grounds for over accessorized, completely nonfunctional looks created just to grab the camera’s attention. With Eaux Claires in mind, Orr and Cook have given us a peek at what they plan to wear that’s on trend and eye catching, but still carrying comfort as the key ingredient.
Fat & the Moon lip & cheek stain, body face mist is all the makeup you really need. That, and extra large sunglasses for dramatic effect.
This perfectly-violet top is actually a vintage one piece bathing suit. So when you need to cool off, simply ditch the lace skirt (or not) and jump right into the water.
These old-school Adidas slip-ons are perfectly comfortable, but still have a cool vibe.
As much attention as ass-high cutoff shorts seem to get, this look is more functional and still bares enough skin to keep the heat down (or up). [Ed. note: Love the shoes.]
Tie oversized button-ups in the front for a less-than-two-minute style upgrade.
Our grateful thanks to Dear Hearts, Donna Orr, and Stella Wingfield Cook.
