After an agonizing wait, the Durham Armory roars as Rakim takes the stage with a band that includes two drummers. “Durham, what up!” he growls into the microphone as he takes off on a nostalgic set that had the decidedly older crowd vibing out.
2)Innovate your cool:
When Rakim is a no-show for Innovate Your Cool’s keynote event (Paid In Full), 9th Wonder and Phonte (Little Brother, anyone?) as well as Duke professor Mark Anthony Neal show out to drop gems for the Hip-Hop heads in attendance. Where did rap come from? Where is it headed? What did Paid In Full stand for when it first dropped? RIP 9th Wonder’s sock game, while Phonte looks cool as a cucumber.
Terrace got off to a rocky start when he greeted Durham’s Carolina Theater with a chipper “What’s up Raleigh?” That’s on the manager, right? Luckily, the crowd helped him figure out his error. Even better his band played a killer set, including a special guest performance from collaborator Rose Gold. Back in the green room, band members congratulate each other on a show well done as they pause for a 360 degree photograph.
The crowd at MotorCo is packed in for the headliner everyone’s been waiting for – GoldLink. The DJ has the crowd hype moments before GoldLink steps on stage. Host Bishop Omega shouts to the crowd: “Who’s ready for GoldLink???” The crowd responds with enthusiasm.
5)Beats and Bars:
Rapper LaLa Specific entertains festival goers at the Beats n Bars Day Party, a hugely popular event with local talent.
6)Black on Black:
The curators and artists of the Black On Black project circle the camera, standing alongside the work they’ve chosen to showcase at the Art of Cool Festival.
A rooftop rap cypher pops off on the top floor of American Underground @ Main, hosted by Cypher Univercity. Hip-Hop heavyweights from across the state pass the mic in a rapper’s dream cypher, all to the sound of J. Rowdy’s tight backing band – the Night Shift. CypherU members show off their freestyling chops alongside other performers from the festival, blending local and national talent in a performance that is truly unique to Art of Cool.
8)Revive Big Band:
Revive Big Band tunes up before their performance at Carolina Theater. They were joined by a host of guest performers including Pharoahe Monch.
Art Of Cool co-founder Al Strong grabs a word with Funk legend George Clinton backstage at the Carolina Theater. The band gets the stage ready for a huge performance as Clinton stays cool in the wings. Just before this photo was taken, George shouts at the 360° photographer: “What’s that, young fella!” When he learns it’s a camera, George is quickly over it.
